Nathan is Baltimore Orioles beat writer at The Baltimore Sun
Nathan Ruiz graduated from Oklahoma State in the spring of 2017 with degrees in sports media and sports management. At 15, Nathan realized he wanted to be a baseball writer, and a Google search of “sports journalism degrees” led the Reno, Nevada native to OSU. While in Stillwater, he worked for the O’Colly, OSU’s student newspaper, covering OSU’s football, baseball and men’s basketball teams while serving in a variety of editorial roles, including sports editor and editor-in-chief. Nathan interned at the Reno Gazette-Journal, The Oklahoman and The Dallas Morning News while in school and, after graduating and participating in the 2017 Hearst National Journalism Awards Championship, he covered the San Diego Padres and 2017 MLB postseason as an intern with MLB.com. Shortly afterward, he joined The Oklahoman’s sports staff as an OSU beat writer, covering the same teams he did while with the O’Colly. Nathan reached his dream job in March of 2019, becoming an Orioles beat writer for The Baltimore Sun.
His time with the O’Colly and in OSU’s sports media program was vital in getting him to where he wanted to be, teaching him the reporting and writing skills necessary to be a full-time sports journalist.
His advice for students interested in joining OSU’s sports media program is to not try to be too narrow in how they approach their education, but rather to explore all of the opportunities available to them both in and outside of the classroom to find what area, whether that’s writing, broadcast, public relations or something else entirely, that best fits their interests and skills.
