He was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas, and came to Oklahoma State largely because of the sports media program. At OSU, he was sports editor, managing editor and editor-in-chief of the O'Colly. He interned twice at The Oklahoman, twice at MLB.com and also spent a winter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He covered Oklahoma football and basketball for two years at the Tulsa World, then went on to cover Michigan football, and later, the Detroit Tigers for The Athletic.
